Where were the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards on VE Day?
The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards landed in France in August 1939 for the first time during the Second World War. After being evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940, the Regiment was back in England where it trained for the next 4 years.
In July 1944, the regiment disembarked in France for the second time of the war. They joined the fighting forces, and pushed their way through France and Belgium before arriving in The Netherlands in September 1944.
In February 1945, the regiment entered Germany. A few months later, in April 1945, it reached Soltau which was strongly held by the German Army. The ‘Skins’ supported the assault of the town and its clearing. This was the last serious action the regiment took part in. On VE Day, it moved up to the Kiel Canal, at Beldorf, to control the crossings at the bridges.
